The Adored One: A Novel of Lillian Lorraine and Florenz Ziegfeld

Susanne Dunlap

Atmosphere Press

Lillian Lorraine was a naive 15-year-old chorine on Broadway when she attracted the notice of the notorious 41-year-old Florenz Ziegfeld. Accustomed to getting what he wanted, Ziegfeld took Lillian under his wing and into his arms, giving her coveted numbers in the Ziegfeld Follies and taking control of her career. But Lillian's rebellious spirit chafed against him, refusing to play according to his rules, and nearly destroying her own career in the process. The Adored One follows her through rise and fall after rise and fall as she comes of age in a world where her youthful beauty was an asset-and a liability.

Now It Can Be: Why Did It Fail Before?

Bern Porter

Edited by Mark Melnicove & Fredrik Averin

The Idea of the Book

Hung up? Fed up? Uptight? Overworked? Underpaid? Too busy to say? Have you ever wished for a different kind of self-help book to embark you on a new kind of journey toward understanding and recovery? Bern Porter (1911-2004) shines a light on self-help, both as an industry and a personal pursuit, through his wit-filled, self-help “founds” appropriated from books, magazines, newspapers, brochures, advertisements, and junk mail. A selection of 200+ founds from six of Porter’s previous books, all out-of-print, this artist’s book is a profound and curative dialogue manifesting itself in the form of questions, statements, and prompts that walk the perilous line between sincerity and satire. With pinpoint precision, he skillfully recontextualizes the humanity often lacking in the original source material. Born in Houlton, Maine, Bern Porter was a physicist, writer, concrete and visual poet, publisher, book artist, and quintessential modern day renaissance artist and thinker like no other.

French Boy: A 1950s Franco-American Childhood

Denis Ledoux

Soleil Press

French Boy: A 1950s Franco-American Childhood is an intimate look into the life of a Maine boy and into a culture shared by hundreds of thousands of Mainers. Denis Ledoux’s life is typical of many Franco Mainers in his generation. As such, it is an important addition to our larger understanding of an ethnic group which has profoundly influenced our state and nation over the course of the last century. Author's Note: “Memoirs such as my French Boy are ones of overlooked details, of information often thought to be marginal and so too frequently lost to history. A basic function of memoir is to give witness to a time and to values gone by, and French Boy succeeds admirably at this function, transcending the life of the individual who is its subject. French Boy is as important as the Franco community it portrays.”

Imagine

Tom Fallon

Goose River Press

Imagine creation. . .Imagine is a rite of creation. It may also be considered a literary epic pointing to the ancient human questions "Why creation?" and "What is the meaning of human life?" The epigraph “Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going?” of the painter Paul Gaugin presents the focus on the human being within the creation as well as the unsettling human question, "Why does the violent creation exist?" “Prelude” begins the prose and free verse literary form of Imagine with time before and during creation. “Naked” describes the darkness, danger, violence of human life on earth, as “Presence” relates the seeming human necessity for and relation to a creator. In “Imagine” Loreen appears, with the beauty, joy and wildness, life, intelligence and self awareness of the questioning living human being. Lastly, “Silence” presents the possible future of the mysterious creation. Imagine: imagine creation.

Ouvert Oeuvre: Openings & Touching in the Wake of the Virus

Adeena Karasick

Illustrated by Warren Lehrer

Lavender Ink

Ouvert Oeuvre: Openings is an ecstatically wrought exploration of re-entering the world after a pandemic that never seems to end. Written by acclaimed poet, performer, cultural theorist Adeena Karasick, and visualized by designer, author, vis lit pioneer Warren Lehrer, the two extended poems foreground language as an organism of hope. They highlight the concept of opening as an ever-swirling palimpsest of spectral voices, textures, whispers and codes transported through intralingual invention, philosophical, geographical, and bodily space. Lehrer choreographs Karasick’s words on the stage of the page via typographic compositions that give form to the interior, emotional, metaphorical, historical and performative underpinnings of the texts. Together, the writing and visuals engage the reader to become an active participant in the experience/performance of the poems. This exquisitely produced, hardcover, smyth-sewn book printed on acid-free paper is augmented by a soundtrack recording performed by Karasick with music by Grammy-award winning composer/musician Frank London.
